History

Metcalf Funeral and Memorial Services is housed in an historic home located at 27th and Q Streets in the heart of Lincoln, Nebraska. The facility has been home to several funeral service providers through the years, first operating as Morey’s Funeral Home until 1920, and then as Helmsdorfer Funeral Home from 1920 until 1961. The historic home was purchased by Robert Metcalf in 1961 and was operated Metcalf Funeral Home as a privately-held family business until its sale to Prime Successions, a national funeral home chain in 1992.

In early 2004, Metcalf Funeral Homes returned to local ownership when it became part of the Roper & Sons family, joining two of the oldest names in the Lincoln funeral home community.

Facilities

The original area of the two-story home has an intricately-carved staircase, molding and doorframes, an original ornate fireplace, and crystal chandeliers. In order to maintain the beauty, elegance, and homelike atmosphere, all offices are located on the second level of the home.

A beautiful chapel was included in one of two major additions made to the original home through the years. The chapel will accommodate approximately 225 people and is appropriate for all religious denominations.

A foyer with a fireplace serves as an area for families to greet friends and visitors with plenty of comfortable seating. This space also includes a place to view a “Life Celebration” video tribute of your loved one using a VCR and TV screen.

Also on the main level are a convenient and easily-accessible meeting room and areas that serve well as a reception space for a light lunch following a service. Two visitation rooms complete the first level of the home.

The outside of the house features large veranda-style porches, beautifully maintained landscaping, an ample, well-lit paved parking lot, and a carport for families to enter and exit the building protected from the weather.
