William Andrew Goodwin

William Andrew Goodwin was born in Knob Noster, Missouri, on April 24, 1927, the second of eight children born to Willie Joe and Olivia (Caldwell) Goodwin. Known as W.A. to his family of origin, as Willie at various work places, and as Bill to his Lincoln family and friends, he left the farm as a teenager, living in numerous places around the United States before finally settling in Lincoln, NE.

He served in the armed forces during the Korean War. While in the army, he was married to Barbara Jean Moore, with whom he shared a son, Walter LaVern. Family was always important to Bill, and he delighted in his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

On June 23, 1954, Bill married Dorothy Green, with whom he shared two daughters, Carolynn LaRae and Barbara DeAnne. As someone who was able to complete his education through only the eighth grade, he took great pride in his daughters’ multiple academic degrees.

Industrious and driven, Bill was known for working multiple jobs, as many as three or four at a time; his work history included polishing cars for Kirk Motors, working as a custodian for Roberts Dairy and for Malone Center, and working as a meat cutter for American Stores Packing Plant. When American Stores closed, Bill began working as a custodian for Lincoln Public Schools, serving in several buildings including Lefler, Kahoa, and Eastridge, where he was building superintendent. In addition to these jobs, Bill also did custodial work as an independent contractor.

Bill was a longtime member of Quinn Chapel A.M.E church where he served as a Trustee and sang in the choir.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; sisters, Ethel Goodwin, JoAnna Smith, and Inez Price; brothers, Robert Goodwin and James Goodwin; and grandchild, LeRoy Goodwin.

He is survived by son, Walter (Marilyn) Goodwin, of Omaha, NE; daughters, Carolynn Goodwin and Barbara (Richard) Miller, all of Lincoln, NE; brothers, Earl (Susie) Goodwin, of Kansas City, MO and Thomas (Asunna) Goodwin, of Oakland, CA; grandchildren, LaVern Crump, of Oklahoma City, OK; LaTika Goodwin and Isaac Goodwin, both of Omaha, NE; and Walter Goodwin, Jr., of Lincoln. Bill also leaves to cherish his memory 16 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of caring friends.
